Brain limbic system, 3-D MRI scan

Limbic system. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the limbic system of a healthy human brain. The front of the brain is at right. The limbic system is involved in instinct, emotion and establishing memories. It consists of an arc of structures, such as the amygdala (light blue, lower centre), that lie below the corpus callosum (green layer, centre). The thalamus (purple), caudate nucleus (bright pink, part of the basal ganglia) and cingulate gyrus (pale pink, above the corpus callosum) are also seen. This image was compiled from successive slice MRI scans at the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) at UCLA, USA

Mosasaurus marine reptile Featured 2001 Print

Mosasaurus marine reptile

Mosasaurus. Artwork of a Mosasaurus marine lizard swimming underwater. This large carnivorous lizard was around 9 metres in length. Its anatomy was similar to present day monitor lizards, and it is considered a close relative. It inhabited the seas of the late Cretaceous period, from 100-65 million years ago. It would have fed on fish, but probably also hunted smaller marine reptiles. It used its tail for propulsion, steering with its limbs
