Female mosquito, SEM

Female mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of an unidentified female mosquito (family Culicidae). The large compound eyes (pink) dominate the head. The hairy antennae branch off the head from between the eyes, pointing upwards. The underside of the body (lower left) is seen with its six legs. A wing is at lower right. The long proboscis (attached to the head at upper centre and running to the right) is used by the female to feed on mammalian blood. Several species of mosquito are vectors for human diseases, including malaria and yellow fever. Magnification: x70 at 6x7cm size

Supernova in galaxy NGC 1300 Featured 10 Oct 2001 Print

Supernova in galaxy NGC 1300

Supernova. Computer artwork of a supernova (pink) in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300. A supernova is the explosive death of a star, which for a short while can outshine an entire galaxy. Only massive stars undergo a supernova, which occurs as the star runs out of fuel. The outer layers of the star are then cast off into space. NGC 1300 lies around 75 million light years from Earth in the constellation Eridanus. Its central bar is around 150, 000 light years across. For an image of NGC 1300 without the supernova, see image R820/382
