Acrylic Blox : False-colour SEM of lycra / nylon woven fabric
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
False-colour SEM of lycra / nylon woven fabric
False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a fabric woven from nylon and Lycra, showing the Lycra sandwiched between two layers of nylon. The nylon forms the large chain-like vertical component of the weave (red), whilst the Lycra is seen in the thinner, criss-crossing lines (yellow/orange) with a layer of nylon beneath (green). Lycra is the trademark of an elastane fibre produced by DuPont. It is a synthetic fibre with highly- elastic qualities, and is used in clothing designed to fit closely to the body (such as swimwear and sports clothing). The material seen here comes from a pair of cycling shorts. Magnification x18 at 6x4.5cm size
