Coloured SEM of B-lymphocyte white blood cells

B-lymphocyte. Coloured Scanning Electron Microgr- aph of a group of B-lymphocyte white blood cells. The cell surfaces are covered with tiny ridges and projections called microvilli, which help it bind to target proteins. B-cells account for 10% of the bodys lymphocytes. On encountering a foreign antigen, such as a bacterial surface protein, the immature B-cell either divides into a number of plasma cells, which produce antibodies that kill the invader, or it matures into a memory cell. Memory cells remain in the body for years, giving immunity to the original pathogen. Magnification x2000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph of B-lymphocyte white blood cells, providing an extraordinary glimpse into the intricate world of our immune system. The image reveals a group of these remarkable cells, their surfaces adorned with numerous tiny ridges and projections known as microvilli. These delicate structures play a crucial role in enabling the B-lymphocytes to bind to target proteins effectively. Accounting for 10% of the body's lymphocytes, B-cells are key players in our defense against foreign invaders. When encountering a foreign antigen like a bacterial surface protein, the immature B-cell faces two possible fates: it either divides into plasma cells that produce antibodies to eliminate the intruder or matures into memory cells. Remarkably, memory cells can persist within our bodies for years, granting us immunity against future encounters with the same pathogen. At magnification x2000 and printed at 6x7cm size, this microscopic masterpiece from Science Photo Library offers an awe-inspiring perspective on these vital components of our immune system. It serves as a testament to both the complexity and beauty found within our own bodies – reminding us of the incredible mechanisms working tirelessly behind-the-scenes to keep us healthy and protected.
