Turkish Crimea Medal 1855, Crimean War 1854-1856

This medal was awarded to Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The medal was issued by Sultan Abdulmecid I of the Ottoman Empire to allied military personnel involved in the Crimean War of 1854-1856. There were three different issues of this medal for those awarded to British, French or Sardinian personnel. On the obverse, the circular silver medal bears the flags of France, Turkey, Britain and Sardinia with the inscription CRIMEA 1855. The flags surmount a cannon, anchor, mortar and map with a partly obscured Imperial Russian flag beneath. The reverse depicts a wreath, made from two sprigs of laurel tied together with ribbon at the base, enclosing the Sultan of Turkeys cypher and the year of the Hegira, 1271. The rim is inscribed with the recipients rank, name and regiment. The ribbon, now faded, is crimson with vertical stripes of green. TRURI : 1931.40.47

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Turkish Crimea Medal 1855, a significant artifact from the Crimean War. Awarded to Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call, this medal is part of an impressive collection of 17 campaign medals belonging to the esteemed Call family. Spanning from the Peninsular War to the Great War, these medals represent generations of service with the Royal Irish Regiment. The Turkish Crimea Medal was bestowed upon allied military personnel involved in the Crimean War by Sultan Abdulmecid I of the Ottoman Empire. The obverse side displays a circular silver medal adorned with flags representing France, Turkey, Britain, and Sardinia. A cannon, anchor, mortar, and map symbolize their joint efforts against Imperial Russia. On its reverse side lies a wreath crafted from laurel sprigs tied together with ribbon at its base. Within this wreath rests the cypher of Sultan Abdulmecid I and the year 1271 according to Hegira calendar system. The rim bears inscriptions detailing Colonel Call's rank, name, and regiment. Although time has faded its crimson ribbon with vertical green stripes over years gone by; this remarkable medal remains an enduring testament to bravery and valor on foreign shores during one of history's most consequential conflicts. Displayed proudly within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection under TRURI:1931.40.47 identifier; it serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice made by individuals like Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call and his comrades who served gallantly in defense of their nations' honor during tumultuous times long past.
