This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Solomons Seal, Polygonatum hirtum, also known as May Lily or False Solomon's Seal. The plant is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and is named after its distinctive tuberous root, which resembles a seal's skin. The illustration is taken from Diederich von Schlechtendal's Flora von Deutschland, published in Jena, Germany, in 1871. Schlechtendal was a renowned botanist and publisher, who dedicated his life to documenting the flora of Germany and beyond.
