Progress of the Embankment of the Thames at Chelsea, 1857. Creator: Unknown

Progress of the Embankment of the Thames at Chelsea, [London], 1857. View of...a portion in progress by Mr. Jay, the contractor, under the Woods and Works, extending nearly from [Vauxhall-bridge] to the entrance to the Grosvenor Canal, Chelsea...The entrances to the different docks, canals, &c. are spanned by straight cast-iron girders, and the roadway made good over, so as to avoid any obstruction to the public, and will thus afford an uninterrupted promenade for the whole distance; the foundation, as shown in the Drawing, is done by what is called half-tide work; and the barge alongside the piles contains a double pumping-engine, for the purpose of drawing off the water to enable the workmen to dig out the foundation for the bricklayers; and further on are men driving sheet piling for the purpose of continuing the dam'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Progress of the Embankment of the Thames at Chelsea' by an unknown artist, depicts a significant moment in the construction of the Chelsea Embankment along the River Thames in London, England, during the mid-19th century. The scene showcases a portion of the embankment under development by Mr. Jay, the contractor, extending from Vauxhall-bridge to the entrance of the Grosvenor Canal in Chelsea. The image reveals the meticulous process of constructing the embankment, with the entrances to various docks and canals spanned by straight cast-iron girders. The roadway is being made good over these structures, ensuring an uninterrupted promenade for the public. The foundation work is being carried out using a method called 'half-tide work,' as evidenced by the barge alongside the piles, which houses a double pumping-engine. This engine is employed to draw off the water, enabling the workmen to dig out the foundation for the bricklayers. Further on, men are seen driving sheet piling to continue the dam. This wood engraving was published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1857, providing a glimpse into the intricacies of civil engineering during this era. The black-and-white image offers a fascinating look at the occupation and dedication of the workmen, transporting essential materials and equipment to the site, and the role of engineering innovations in shaping the urban landscape of London.
