Jews. (Talmudists), 1862. Creator: Karl Fiale

Jews. (Talmudists), 1862. Sheet 22 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Sheet 22 of the ethnographic album, "Jews. (Talmudists)" created by Karl Fiale for the seminal work, "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. Commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire, this two-volume set is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century. Volume 1 of this groundbreaking work consists of 62 color illustrations, including this one, which depict various ethnic groups from across the empire in their traditional attire. This volume also includes a fold-out table and a colored-coded ethnographic map, providing valuable information on the size of the populations and their geographical distribution. This particular image, titled "Jews. (Talmudists)," showcases a group of Jewish men engrossed in the study of the Talmud, the central text of Rabbinic Judaism. The Talmud is a vast collection of Jewish laws, commentaries, and interpretations, and its study is a central aspect of Jewish religious and intellectual life. The men in the image are shown sitting on the floor, with their heads bent over their texts, and their traditional fur-trimmed hats, or shtreimels, are piled nearby. The "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" is a remarkable achievement of its time, reflecting the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. Its publication represents a significant step forward in the study of the diverse peoples of the Russian Empire and their cultures.
