EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite illustration from "The Book of Simple Medicines" by Mattheaus Platearius, dating back to the 15th century. The artwork, titled "Honeysuckle, Sage and Rose" was beautifully crafted by Robinet Testard on vellum. Measuring 26x35.5 cm, this piece is currently housed in the National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia. Believed to have been created for Louise of Savoy, wife of Charles of Angouleme, this medieval manuscript holds great historical significance. The intricate illumination depicts a variety of curative herbs and flowers that were commonly used during that era. On the left side of the composition lies lonicera periclymenum or honeysuckle with its delicate vines adorned with thorny leaves. In the center stands salvia officinalis or sage, known for its healing properties and aromatic fragrance. Finally, rosa alba or white rose graces the right side with its elegant petals symbolizing purity and grace. This remarkable artwork not only serves as a visual delight but also offers insight into ancient herbal remedies and their importance in medieval medicine practices. It is a testament to human ingenuity in utilizing nature's gifts for healing purposes.
