EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Sheffield, Yorkshire, around 1910. Standing tall and proud in the heart of Fitzalan Square is the magnificent General Post Office. A symbol of communication and connectivity, this architectural gem was built in 1910 with a grandeur that demanded attention from all who passed by. The black-and-white image captures the essence of an era long gone, where horse-drawn carriages and well-dressed pedestrians filled the cobbled streets. The General Post Office stands as a testament to a time when sending letters and parcels held great significance in people's lives. Fast forward several decades, and this historic landmark underwent a transformation. In 1999, after serving its purpose for nearly nine decades, the doors of the General Post Office closed for good. However, rather than fading into obscurity like many other relics from yesteryears often do, it found new life as it was converted into what is now known as the Sheffield Institute of Arts. Today, students walk through these very same halls that once echoed with postal workers' footsteps. The building has become an emblematic fusion between past and present—a place where creativity thrives amidst echoes of history. Preserved within Sheffield City Archives' collection lies this remarkable snapshot frozen in time—an invitation to explore our heritage while appreciating how old structures can be repurposed to serve future generations.
