Twinspot gobies feeding

Twinspot gobies (Signigobius biocellatus) feeding. These fish are found in sandy lagoons and bays near coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. They feed on small invertebrates by sifting mouthfuls of sand. These gobies, which reach lengths of 6.5 centimetres, have two large spots on their dorsal fins that create the illusion the fish are much larger than they are to ward off predators. Photographed off Papua New Guinea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment of Twinspot gobies (Signigobius biocellatus) feeding in their natural habitat. Found in the sandy lagoons and bays near coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, these fish have adapted unique feeding techniques. By sifting mouthfuls of sand, they extract small invertebrates to nourish themselves. Measuring up to 6.5 centimeters in length, these tiny creatures possess two large spots on their dorsal fins that cleverly create an illusion of size. This optical trickery serves as a defense mechanism against potential predators lurking nearby. Photographed off the stunning coast of Papua New Guinea, this image showcases not only the beauty but also the intricate biology of marine life. The vibrant colors and delicate details highlight the incredible diversity found beneath our oceans' surface. As we observe this trio of Twinspot gobies engrossed in their feeding frenzy, it reminds us of nature's extraordinary ability to adapt and thrive even within challenging environments. These fascinating creatures exemplify how every organism plays a vital role within its ecosystem. This remarkable photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for capturing moments like these that inspire awe and curiosity about our planet's wondrous fauna and flora.
