Old man, art by Durer
Durers Old Man. Sketch by the German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) of the head of an old man (1521). Durer did much to introduce the Renaissance style of art to northern Europe. He travelled to Italy in 1494 and 1505 and studied the new art. He was one of the first to study and use perspective, and his mathematical rigour meant his works were among the best of the time

Created in 1521, this sketch captures the head of an elderly man with incredible attention to detail and mastery of technique. Durer's contribution to introducing the Renaissance style of art to northern Europe cannot be overstated. During his travels to Italy in 1494 and 1505, Durer immersed himself in studying the new artistic trends emerging during that period.
