Gagarin and Tereshkova, Soviet cosmonauts, souvenir postcard. Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) was the first person in space. On 12 April 1961, he completed a single orbit around the Earth in a trip lasting 108 minutes. Valentina Treshkova (born 1937, here referred to as V. Nikolajewa-Tereshkova) was the first woman in space. From 16 June 1963, she spent almost three days in orbit, circling the Earth 48 times. Both cosmonauts became heroes in the Soviet Union, and famous worldwide. This postcard, which has the caption Visit the USSR, was issued in 1963 to promote tourism
