Goubet submarine, 1885 engraving. This early submarine, built by the French inventor Claude Goubet (1837-1903) in 1881, was designed for two people. It was battery-powered, had a Siemens electric motor for its propeller, and a light mounted on the front. The operators could see through small glass windows using a set of prisms to see up, down and around. The first Goubet submarine was 5 metres long and weighed 6 tonnes. It was tested in the river Seine in Paris, France, but proved to be unstable in the water

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork print showcases the Goubet submarine, a remarkable invention by French inventor Claude Goubet. Crafted in 1881, this early submarine was designed to accommodate two individuals and boasted an array of innovative features for its time. Powered by a battery and equipped with a Siemens electric motor propeller, it also featured a front-mounted light to aid navigation in dark waters. The interior of the Goubet submarine reveals small glass windows fitted with prisms, enabling operators to observe their surroundings from various angles. This technological marvel allowed them to peer upwards, downwards, and around while submerged underwater. Measuring five meters long and weighing six tonnes, the first prototype underwent testing in the renowned river Seine in Paris but unfortunately proved unstable on water. This black-and-white engraving provides us with a glimpse into history as it beautifully captures both the intricate details of this early submersible vessel and the ingenuity behind its design. The illustration reflects the advancements made during that era when electrical technology was still emerging. With its historical significance and European origins, this artwork serves as a testament to human innovation and transportation evolution throughout centuries past. It portrays Claude Goubet's contribution to maritime exploration while highlighting his role as one of France's pioneering inventors during the late 1800s.
