MODEL RELEASED. Chilli harvest. Farmer drying a harvested crop of chillis, Capsicum annuum, in a solar drier in order to preserve them. This drier, an example of intermediate technology, traps the heat of the Sun to dry chillis. As such it is environmentally friendly and cheap to operate. Chilli peppers are grown in tropical areas for flavouring foods such as curries and tabasco sauce. In their dried form they are also known as red or cayenne peppers. The solar drier was developed by the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Photographed in Zaire

This print captures the essence of sustainable farming practices as a farmer diligently dries chillies in a solar drier. The model-released image showcases the intricate process of preserving harvested crops, specifically Capsicum annuum, also known as chilli peppers. The solar drier, an exemplary display of intermediate technology, harnesses the power of the Sun to efficiently dry and preserve these vibrant red peppers. This environmentally friendly method not only reduces energy consumption but also proves cost-effective for farmers. Chilli peppers are predominantly grown in tropical regions and widely used for adding flavor to various dishes like curries and tabasco sauce. When dried, they transform into popular spices known as red or cayenne peppers. Developed by the University of Stuttgart in Germany, this innovative solar drier stands as a testament to advancements in agricultural techniques. It optimizes land use while ensuring food preservation through efficient drying methods. In this photograph taken in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), we witness the dedication and expertise required to successfully cultivate and prepare crops for market distribution. The image beautifully encapsulates both tradition and progress within agriculture. Science Photo Library brings us yet another visually stunning depiction that celebrates sustainable farming practices while highlighting the importance of technological innovation in our quest for environmental harmony.
