The Balloon (1862) by Edouard Manet C016 / 8985

The Balloon (1862). Lithograph by French artist Edouard Manet (1832-1883) of a balloon flight taking place in Paris, France, on 15 August 1862. Balloon flights were a popular public entertainment of the time, with these festivities marking the French national holiday of the Feast of the Assumption. The ascent here was by the balloonist Madame Poitevin. Details drawn from life by Manet include banners, maypoles, pantomime booths, and a crippled beggar in the foreground. Manet, normally a painter, did not usually produce lithographs, but had been asked to do so as part of a campaign to promote the technique

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Balloon (1862) by Edouard Manet captures the vibrant celebration of a balloon flight in Paris, France. This lithograph, created by the renowned French artist, showcases the popular public entertainment of balloon flights during the 19th century. The scene is set on August 15,1862, marking the Feast of the Assumption, a significant religious festival in France. In this lively artwork, Manet skillfully depicts various elements drawn from life: colorful banners fluttering in the wind, maypoles adorned with ribbons and flowers, pantomime booths filled with laughter and excitement. Amidst this festive atmosphere stands a crippled beggar who adds a touch of realism to an otherwise joyous occasion. Although primarily known as a painter, Manet was commissioned to create this lithograph as part of a campaign to promote this innovative printing technique. His attention to detail and ability to capture human emotion are evident throughout the piece. The spectators depicted include men, women, and children from all walks of life who have gathered in anticipation to witness Madame Poitevin's daring ascent into the sky. The sense of awe and wonder is palpable as they watch this technological marvel unfold before their eyes. Manet's "The Balloon" not only celebrates an exhilarating moment in history but also serves as an important snapshot of European culture during that time period.
