EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of a bygone era, transporting us back to the 1950s when British Railways (BR) sought to entice travelers to explore the picturesque Lincolnshire coast. The poster, skillfully created by artist F Donald Blake, showcases three charming coastal towns - Cleethorpes, Mablethorpe, and Sutton-on-Sea - along with the ever-popular seaside resort of Skegness. The focal point of this artwork is undoubtedly the iconic Jolly Fisherman. A beloved character synonymous with railway posters promoting Skegness, he graces a roundel on the left side of the image. With his wide smile and jaunty pose, he invites viewers to embark on an unforgettable adventure along these sandy shores. Accompanying this delightful illustration is a map highlighting each town's location within Lincolnshire. This thoughtful addition not only aids potential visitors in planning their journey but also serves as a testament to BR's commitment to providing comprehensive travel information. As we gaze upon this beautifully preserved print from National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we are transported back in time. We can almost feel the excitement that must have filled train carriages as families embarked on their summer holidays or day trips to these idyllic coastal destinations. It serves as a reminder that even decades later, there remains an enduring charm and allure in exploring Britain's stunning coastline through rail travel.
