Ian McKellen, pictured in Stratford Upon Avon, Midlands.
Ian will be casting superstition to the wind when he takes on a leading role at Stratford Upon Avon next month. For Ian (seen here) is defying the theatre legend which says you must not mention the name of MacBeth especially before an opening night.
Theatre people who believe it brings bad luck to mention the name refer only to " the Scottish play". But Ian, who will play the title role at The Other Place in Stratford, opening on 4th August said " I don t believe in superstition". " But once when I mentioned the name Macbeth in another actors dressing room he made me go outside, turn round three times and recite a blessing to remove the curse" " Most people in the theatre take it very seriously"

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see the esteemed actor Ian McKellen standing confidently in Stratford Upon Avon, Midlands. The picture captures a moment of defiance as Ian prepares to take on the leading role at Stratford Upon Avon, defying the age-old theatre superstition surrounding MacBeth. Traditionally, mentioning the name of MacBeth before an opening night is believed to bring bad luck among theatre people. They refer to it only as "the Scottish play". However, Ian boldly declares his disbelief in such superstitions and refuses to succumb to fear. Ian recounts an incident when he mentioned MacBeth's name in another actor's dressing room and was promptly sent outside to perform a ritualistic blessing three times over. It is clear that many individuals within the industry take this taboo very seriously. Set against the backdrop of 1970s England, this image not only showcases Sir Ian McKellen's talent but also highlights his rebellious spirit. As he prepares for his performance at The Other Place in Stratford upon Avon on August 4th, we witness a man unafraid to challenge tradition and forge his own path. This photograph from Mirrorpix serves as a reminder that even legends like McKellen are not immune to theatrical customs and beliefs while simultaneously showcasing their determination and dedication towards their craft.
