EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when the iconic Pendennis Castle steam locomotive bid farewell to its homeland, embarking on a new journey across oceans. In 1977, this magnificent piece of British engineering was sold to Australian iron ore producers, Hamersley Iron. As crowds gathered in Birmingham on that fateful day of May 29th, they witnessed an emotional spectacle as the Pendennis Castle led the Great Western Envoy from Birmingham to Didcot and back. Passengers and enthusiasts alike lined up along the railway tracks, eager to catch a glimpse of this majestic machine before it embarked on its voyage Down Under. The atmosphere was filled with both excitement and nostalgia as people bid their final farewells to a symbol of British rail history. The following day marked another significant chapter for the Pendennis Castle. Making her way towards Avonmouth - Bristol's bustling port - she was carefully loaded onto the cargo vessel Mishref. On June 2nd, 1977, with hearts full of anticipation and pride, this beloved steam engine set sail for Sydney, Australia. This photograph not only immortalizes a remarkable moment in time but also pays homage to an era where steam engines ruled supreme. It serves as a reminder of our rich industrial heritage and how these powerful locomotives connected communities while leaving indelible marks on our collective memory.
