This evocative photograph captures the spirit of war time Britain, as York railway station in North East England comes alive with H.L. Oakley's silhouette recruitment posters. Circa 1914-1915, the early stages of the First World War saw an urgent call for recruits, and these powerful advertisements, featuring silhouettes of soldiers holding weapons such as rifles and bayonets, were a common sight outside stations and public buildings. The brickwork and doorways of the station provide a stark contrast to the crisp, black and white silhouettes, with their uniformed figures and shields emblazoned with the insignia of various regiments. The image of Harry Lawrence, a well-known recruitment poster character, can be seen on the left, his determined gaze and outstretched hand beckoning potential recruits to join the fight.
