EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, soldiers and nurses from the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) of Quex Park Hospital in Birchington, England, gather for a day of camaraderie and competition at the annual Sports Day held at Woodford House School field during War Weapons Week in 1918. The event, organized by the hospital and its Annexe at St. Michaels, aimed to raise funds for the Birchington War Depot, which provided essential articles for the local hospitals. Twelve events were held throughout the day, including races for children and a staff-only competition. The determination and spirit of the participants are palpable as they prepare for their events, with the backdrop of the beautiful Woodford House School field adding to the idyllic scene. Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. The hospital was run by the Birchington Detachment, with Hannah Powell-Cotton serving as Commandant. Mrs. Powell-Cotton was the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum and the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area. The hospital played a crucial role in the community during the First World War, providing care and support to wounded soldiers and nurses. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity that defined the VAD hospitals during this time.
