Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Suffragette Trampling on Policeman Ceramic
A gloriously victorious suffragette stands with arms outstretched on the head of a prostrate policeman. She is dressed in the colours of the W.S.P.U - purple, white and green, waves an umbrella above her head and carries a Votes for Women placard around her neck. The policeman has lost his helmet, his authority and his dignity! The piece dates from 1909 and elements are very similar to a contemporary postcard entitled Suffragists on the War Path. One suffragette is screaming Jump on him, He is only a mere man whilst another does just that. Date: 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
This ceramic print, dating back to 1909, vividly depicts the unyielding spirit and determination of the British suffragettes in their relentless pursuit of women's right to vote. The gloriously victorious suffragette stands triumphantly on the head of a prostrate policeman, her arms outstretched in a gesture of victory. Dressed in the iconic colours of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U) - purple, white, and green - she waves an umbrella above her head and carries a "Votes for Women" placard around her neck. The policeman, once a symbol of authority, lies defeated beneath her, having lost his helmet and the remnants of his dignity. The scene is reminiscent of contemporary postcards from the era, such as "Suffragists on the War Path," which depict similar acts of civil disobedience. The suffragette's defiant cry of "Jump on him, he is only a mere man!" is echoed by another suffragette, who does just that, as they assert their power and demand recognition for their cause. This powerful and evocative image serves as a testament to the courage and resilience of the suffragettes and their unwavering commitment to securing women's suffrage.
