EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, showcases two intriguing birds of the European continent - the Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) and the Nuthatch (Sitta europaea). The illustration, produced in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830, is a testament to the exceptional artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. The Starling, depicted on the left, is a common bird found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. With its iridescent plumage and glossy sheen, it is a striking sight to behold. The Starling's beak is long and curved, perfectly adapted for foraging and probing the ground for food. In this illustration, the Starling is shown perched on a branch, its wings slightly spread, as if ready to take flight. On the right, the Nuthatch is illustrated in a more active pose, clinging to the bark of a tree with its powerful feet and using its beak to extract seeds from the crevices. The Nuthatch is a small, agile bird, with a distinctive black and white plumage and a distinctive crest on its head. Its name comes from its habit of storing nuts in cracks and crevices, which it retrieves and hammers open with its beak. The illustration was produced by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by David, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art is a prime example of the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history illustrations of the time. This illustration is not only a stunning work of art, but also an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the natural world as it was understood over 200 years ago.
