This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, showcases two intriguing birds of the European continent - the Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) and the Nuthatch (Sitta europaea). The illustration, produced in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830, is a testament to the exceptional artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. The Starling, depicted on the left, is a common bird found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. With its iridescent plumage and glossy sheen, it is a striking sight to behold. The Starling's beak is long and curved, perfectly adapted for foraging and probing the ground for food.
