EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, taken at Glamis Castle in Scotland in 1923, we find Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) standing beside her mother, the Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The pair are captured in the picturesque grounds of their ancestral home, with the great many-faced sundial providing a striking backdrop. Elizabeth, born in 1900, would later become the Duchess of York and, following the abdication of King Edward VIII, the Queen Consort of King George VI. Her marriage to the future monarch took place at Westminster Abbey on April 26, 1923, just a year before this photograph was taken. Glamis Castle, nestled in the heart of Angus, Scotland, has been the seat of the powerful Lyon clan since the late Middle Ages. The castle's rich history and the surrounding lands have been in the Bowes-Lyon family since the 15th century. This strong connection to their ancestral home added a sense of tradition and nobility to Elizabeth's upbringing, which would serve her well in her future role as a royal consort and, eventually, as the Queen Mother. The sundial, with its intricate carvings and multiple faces, stands as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring legacy of the Bowes-Lyon family. The photograph captures a moment of tranquility and intimacy between mother and daughter, as they share a connection to their past and look forward to the future. The image evokes a sense of history, royalty, and the beauty of Scotland, making it a cherished piece of the Bowes-Lyon family's story.
