Tote Bag : The RMS Olympic - White Star Line
Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
The RMS Olympic - White Star Line
The RMS Olympic - White Star Line - sister ship of the ill-fated RMS Titanic. Many postcards have the incorrect ship depicted as the two were very similar, but close examination of the upper deck level facing confirm the identification as correct in this instance. The number of lifeboats shown dates this photograph to after the sinking of the Titanic. Prior to 1912, Olympic carried only 16 boats (eight on each side of the ship, stowed in two groups of four - separated by a stretch of bulwark).

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the RMS Olympic, a White Star Line vessel and the sister ship of the infamous RMS Titanic. Contrary to popular belief, many postcards and images depict the wrong ship, but a close examination of the upper deck level reveals the correct identification in this instance. The RMS Olympic was launched in 1911, and prior to the tragic sinking of her sister ship in 1912, she carried only 16 lifeboats. However, as seen in this photograph, the number of lifeboats displayed indicates a post-Titanic modification. The RMS Olympic was a transatlantic liner of immense size and luxury, and her elegant design is evident in this image. With her distinctive white hull and the iconic funnel adorned with the White Star Line logo, she was a sight to behold. This photograph, estimated to date from around 1920, offers a glimpse into the history of ocean travel and the evolution of maritime safety following the Titanic disaster.
