A Relief Party making their way up the trenches

A Relief Party making their way up the trenches. On reverse of postcard - This shows the relief party making their way up to the trenches along the shell-holed and muddy roads. This takes place in the evening as soon as it gets dark as the road is under fire and is not used in the daytime. Marching in single file, star shells are being sent up. These are continually being let off all through the night. 1190 Private Leslie Loveland, 1St/5Th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 143Rd Brigade, 25Th Division. Joined 21.11.15

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard image captures the moment of a relief party making their way up the trenches during the First World War. The scene is set on a shell-holed and muddy road, which was too dangerous to traverse during the day due to constant enemy fire. The relief party, led by Private Leslie Loveland of the 1st/5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, part of the 143rd Brigade in the 25th Division, marches in single file as they approach the trenches. The evening hour is chosen for their journey, as the road is safer in the darkness. Star shells are being sent up, illuminating the night sky and providing brief moments of light amidst the darkness. The continuous explosions serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict. Private Loveland, who joined the regiment in November 1915, and his comrades bravely push forward, undeterred by the perilous conditions. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of trench warfare and the courage and resilience of the soldiers who served during this time.
