EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a precious moment in the history of the Dutch Royal Family, featuring Queen Wilhelmina of Holland (1880-1962) and her family, including her husband, Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1876-1934), and their only child, the future Queen Juliana (1909-2004). The image, taken in 1918, showcases the familial bond between the royal figures as they gather together for a warm and intimate moment. Queen Wilhelmina, who ascended to the throne at the tender age of eight following the death of her father, King Willem III, reigned from 1890 to 1948. Her marriage to Duke Henry, which took place in 1901, remained childless until the arrival of Juliana in 1909. The Duke served as the Queen's consort, providing stability and support during her long reign. In this photograph, Juliana, dressed in a white dress and sitting on her father's lap, is engrossed in a book, reflecting the importance of education and literacy in the royal household. The image encapsulates the love, unity, and the rich history of the Dutch monarchy during a time of change and growth. The Dutch monarchy, which traces its lineage back to the House of Orange-Nassau, has been a significant part of the country's history for centuries. This photograph offers a glimpse into the personal lives of its members, showcasing the familial relationships and the enduring legacy of the Dutch Royal Family.
