EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative programme cover heralds the Gala Concert of French Music held at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London on 8 November 1944. An initiative to raise funds for the war victims in Normandy and the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmens Families Association, the concert was a powerful symbol of solidarity and support between the Allied forces during World War II. The cover, awash in the red, white, and blue of the British and French flags, exudes a sense of patriotism and unity. The title, "Gala Concert of French Music," is written in bold, beige letters, with the subheading, "In aid of the war victims in Normandy, and of the funds of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmens Families Association," appearing below. The concert featured a lineup of esteemed musicians, including Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, with George Stratton as the leader. The programme boasted an impressive roster of pieces, including selections by Gounod, Bizet, Saint-Saens, and Duparc, with Maggie Teyte as the vocal soloist. The piano accompaniment was provided by Cyril Smith and Phyllis Sellick, and Arnold Greir played the organ. The French and British national anthems opened the concert, underscoring the shared commitment of the Allied forces to the cause of peace and restoration. This poignant event not only provided much-needed assistance to those affected by the war but also served as a testament to the enduring bond between France and Britain during the 1940s.
