EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dating back to 1865, showcases an intriguing assemblage of ancient fish species: Planers Lamprey (Petromyzon planeri), Mud Lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis or Petromyzon branchialis), Borer (Gastrobranchus coecus), and Lancelet (Branchiostoma lanceolatum). The Planers Lamprey, also known as the European Broodstock Lamprey or Silver Lamprey, is a long, white, silver fish with a distinct, elongated snout. The Mud Lamprey, or European River Lamprey, Blind Lamprey, or Pride Lamprey, is a brown, eel-like fish with a yellow, blind-like head. The Borer, or Hagfish, is a unique, long, thin, and slime-coated creature, often referred to as a 'slime eel' or 'poison ramper.' It is the only living member of the class Myxini and is characterized by its lack of jaws and paired fins. The Lancelet, or Amphioxus, is a small, elongated, white, and transparent fish that resembles a tiny, ancient shark. It is an essential species in the study of vertebrate evolution due to its primitive features, such as a notochord, gill slits, and a dorsal nerve cord. This photograph, taken during the Victorian era, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 1860s, showcasing the diverse and intriguing array of fish species that have inhabited our planet for millions of years. The Planers Lamprey, Mud Lamprey, Borer, and Lancelet represent a testament to the richness and complexity of marine and freshwater ecosystems, providing valuable insights into the history of life on Earth.
