EDITORS COMMENTS
Praca do Comercio, also known as Terreiro do Paco, is a grand square located in Lisbon, Portugal's historic center and a short walk from the Tagus River. This stunning photograph, taken circa 1908, captures the square in its full glory, showcasing the beautiful architecture of the buildings surrounding it. At the heart of the square stands an equestrian statue of King Jose I (1714-1777), the monarch who played a significant role in Portugal's victory against the French invasion in 1808. The statue, which was erected in 1873, is perched atop a grand plinth adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The square, which translates to 'Commerce Square,' was once the heart of Lisbon's commercial activity, with merchants and traders gathering to exchange goods. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination and a beloved open space for locals and visitors alike. The square's wide expanse invites pedestrians to stroll along its edges, taking in the beauty of the buildings and the vibrant energy of the city. The photograph also offers a glimpse into the daily life of early 20th-century Lisbon. Horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians can be seen making their way across the square, adding to the scene's charm and nostalgia. The photo's black and white tones further emphasize the historical significance of the moment, making it a beautiful and captivating reminder of Lisbon's rich past.
