EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Dequevauviller after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three fascinating marine species: the Horse Mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), Leerfish (Lichia amia), and Pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). The intricate detail and vibrant colors bring these underwater creatures to life, transporting us to the rich and diverse world of the ocean. The Horse Mackerel, also known as the Atlantic Horse Mackerel or Caranx trachure, is a common fish found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. It is characterized by its long, slender body and distinctive dark lateral line. Horse Mackerel are an important food source for humans and are also popular game fish. The Leerfish, or Amie-Amie, is a unique and intriguing deep-water species. With its elongated snout and large eyes, it resembles a cross between a fish and an eel. Leerfish are found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and are known for their ability to change color to blend in with their surroundings. The Pompano, or Pompano Jack, is a popular sport fish found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is a fast-swimming fish with a distinctive silver color and black lateral line. Pompano are highly prized for their delicious taste and are often served in upscale restaurants. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century and serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity of marine life that exists in our oceans. It was originally published in Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825.
