EDITORS COMMENTS
In the autumn of 1904, as the presidential election between incumbent Republican President Theodore Roosevelt and Democratic challenger Alton B. Parker drew near, the political landscape was ablaze with intense campaigning and heated debates. At the forefront of the Republican efforts was George Cortelyou, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, who was depicted in this Puck Magazine cartoon as the mythological figure Sisyphus, endlessly rolling a boulder labeled "Majority for Roosevelt" up a steep hill. The image, published on September 14, 1904, underscored the arduous and seemingly Sisyphean task of securing a political victory, a challenge that Cortelyou and his team were determined to overcome. Despite the steep incline and the immense size of the boulder, Cortelyou's unwavering determination and the support of his party were evident in his determined expression and the resilient stance of his posture. The cartoon served as a testament to the tenacity and perseverance required to navigate the complexities of political campaigns, and the unyielding spirit of those who dedicated themselves to the cause.
