Montagu Monuments, St Edmunds Church, Warkton, Northants

The Montagu Monuments are four stunning marble statues in the unlikely setting of Grade I listed St Edmunds Church in Warkton, Northamptonshire. The Statuary assemblages commemorates four members of the same family (the Montagus from nearby Boughton House). Two were created by Louis Francois Roubiliac, however the pictured statues (for Lady Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu (1712 1775)) are by Peter Mathias Van Gelder (circa 1742 - 1809) erected in Warkton in 1781. The monument shows the distress witnessed by the representative figures of the Distressed Woman, Widows and Orphans, who were championed and supported by Mary throughout her life in many charitable acts, which are summarised in the tribute, by Henry Lyte, on the column, which includes: No wonder then, if oer thy Urn - Poor Orphan Babes & Widows mourn, - Heavn gains a holy Saint tis true, But They have lost their MONTAGU. The Angel attempts to ease the grief by pointing skywards, indicating the place in heaven to where the Duchess had gone. Date: 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The Montagu Monuments: A Testament to Charity and Devotion in St Edmund's Church, Warkton, Northamptonshire" 2.. The Montagu Monuments in the quaint setting of St Edmund's Church in Warkton, Northamptonshire, are a captivating testament to the charitable works and devotion of the Montagu family. These four marble statues, erected between 1742 and 1781, commemorate four members of the same family, three of whom were created by the renowned sculptor Louis Francois Roubiliac, while the statue of Lady Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu (1712-1775), is the work of Peter Mathias Van Gelder. Erected in 1781, Lady Mary Montagu's monument, pictured here, is a poignant representation of her dedication to the welfare of the distressed. The statue shows the Duchess, dressed in elegant robes, seated on a chair, her eyes closed in prayer. Surrounding her are the figures of the Distressed Woman, Widows, and Orphans, who are depicted in various stages of grief. These figures symbolize the plight of those whom Lady Mary had championed and supported throughout her life through numerous charitable acts. The inscription on the column, penned by Henry Lyte, encapsulates the sentiments of loss felt by those left behind: "No wonder then, if oer thy Urn - Poor Orphan Babes & Widows mourn, - Heavn gains a holy Saint tis true, But They have lost their MONTAGU." An angel, with outstretched wings, attempts to ease the grief by pointing skywards, indicating the place in heaven to which the Duchess had ascended. This evocative monument stands as a reminder of the enduring impact of one woman's compassion and generosity, immortalized in the hallowed walls of St Edmund's Church.
