EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, we see a prototype of the Principal Officers' summer uniform designed by the London Fire Brigade in the 1960s. The design, which features a lightweight jacket, was intended to provide relief from the heat during warmer months. Unlike the traditional uniform, this prototype does not include a belt, making it more comfortable for the officers. The London Fire Brigade, established in 1865, is a historic and esteemed organization responsible for firefighting and emergency services in the city of London. The uniforms worn by its officers have undergone numerous changes over the years to accommodate the evolving needs of the service. This particular design, which dates back to 1963, was an unsuccessful attempt to create a more breathable uniform for the brigade's Principal Officers during the summer months. The jacket, made of a lightweight fabric, is adorned with brass buttons and epaulets, giving it a smart and professional appearance. The uniform's simplicity and lack of a belt were innovative ideas for the time, but ultimately, the design did not gain widespread adoption within the brigade. The London Fire Brigade's uniforms have always been an essential part of the organization's identity, and this prototype offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of their summer uniforms during the 1960s. Despite its unsuccessful introduction, this design represents an important chapter in the history of the London Fire Brigade's uniforms.
