Ramsgate sands PEN01_15_03_29424

Royal Victoria Pavilion, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent. A general view showing Ramsgate sands, with a partial view of the Royal Victoria Pavilion in the foreground and the Ramsgate Harbour Station in the mid-ground, photographed between 1926 and 1939.
The pavilion was built in 1903 by Stanley Davenport Adshead and originally contained a theatre and cafe. It was later converted to a casino and to a public house in 2018. To the north of the pavilion was the Ramsgate Harbour Station, a second railway station built in 1863 and closed in 1926. It was used as a site of seaside entertainment, along with the Pleasurama and Ramsgate Tunnels, and was destroyed by a fire in 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, captured between 1926 and 1939 by Historic England Archive, transports us back in time to the idyllic Ramsgate sands in Kent. The image showcases a general view of the picturesque beach, with the magnificent Royal Victoria Pavilion stealing the foreground. Designed by Stanley Davenport Adshead and erected in 1903, this architectural gem originally housed a theater and cafe before undergoing transformations into a casino and public house later on. Adjacent to the pavilion stands Ramsgate Harbour Station, an additional railway station constructed in 1863 but sadly closed just over six decades later. This charming seaside spot served as a hub for entertainment seekers who flocked to enjoy its offerings alongside nearby attractions like Pleasurama and Ramsgate Tunnels. Tragically, disaster struck when fire ravaged through the beloved harbor station in 1998, leaving behind only memories of its former glory. The photograph not only captures these historical landmarks but also evokes feelings of nostalgia for an era defined by leisurely holidays spent at coastal destinations like Ramsgate. It serves as a poignant reminder of both loss and resilience – showcasing how even after destruction, communities come together to rebuild their cherished spaces. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported to an enchanting world where Edwardian elegance meets Victorian grandeur against the backdrop of sandy shores – forever preserving moments that shaped our collective memory of seaside amusements from days gone by.
