EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Rolvenden Mill in Ashford, Kent. Taken in August 1932 by Francis Matthew Shea, it showcases the post mill standing proudly against a picturesque backdrop. Despite its age, this historic windmill still exudes an air of grandeur. The image reveals two damaged sails on the post mill, evidence of the wear and tear endured over time. Built in the early 18th century, this particular mill has a rich history dating back to around 1596 when a previous structure stood on this very spot. However, its working days came to an end in 1883. The original roundhouse that once sheltered the mill was unfortunately removed during the First World War. Yet hope was not lost for Rolvenden Mill as it underwent restoration efforts in 1956. This rejuvenation breathed new life into the ancient structure and ensured its preservation for generations to come. As you gaze upon this remarkable photograph, allow yourself to be transported back in time to an era where windmills were essential elements of rural landscapes across England. The sheer magnitude of Rolvenden Mill's presence is truly awe-inspiring – a testament to both human ingenuity and nature's power. Francis Matthew Shea's skillful composition captures every intricate detail with precision and grace, making this print a cherished piece of history that will forever adorn any space lucky enough to display it.
