EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic beauty of Mount Ephraim Mill, located in Moat Lane, Mount Ephraim, Ash, Dover, Kent. Taken in April 1929 by Francis Matthew Shea, the image showcases the post mill in full working condition. At the time of this photograph, the mill was still actively grinding corn and serving its purpose within the community. Dating back to 1735, this post mill had an intriguing history. Originally situated in Ringleton, it was later relocated to Ash in 1818. The mill's architectural style reflects Georgian influences and stands as a testament to England's rich heritage. Sadly, fate dealt a cruel blow to this historic structure when it fell victim to a powerful gale in 1955. Despite its destruction over half a century ago, this photograph allows us to appreciate and remember Mount Ephraim Mill as it once stood tall against the winds of time. Francis Matthew Shea skillfully captured not only the physical grandeur of this windmill but also its significance as an integral part of local life during that era. This print serves as a poignant reminder of our connection with history and how even fleeting moments frozen on film can evoke emotions and spark curiosity about times gone by.
