SIZEWELL B POWER STATION, LEISTON, SUFFOLK COASTAL. A view from a tower crane showing the reactor containment building during construction at Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station.
Sizewell B is one of two nuclear power stations on the Suffolk coast near the village of Sizewell. Sizewell A, its predecessor, is in the process of being decommissioned. Sizewell B is a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR); the first of its kind to be constructed in the UK. John Laing plc were awarded the contract for the main civil engineering work on 19th May 1987. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive sight of the reactor containment building during its construction at Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station. Taken from a tower crane, the image offers a unique perspective on this monumental engineering feat. Situated on the Suffolk coast near the village of Sizewell, Sizewell B is one of two nuclear power stations in the area. Its predecessor, Sizewell A, is currently undergoing decommissioning. What makes Sizewell B particularly noteworthy is that it was the first Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) to be built in the UK. The main civil engineering work for this groundbreaking project was awarded to John Laing plc on May 19th, 1987. Over an eight-year period, construction took place until its completion in 1995. Today, Sizewell B continues to operate under EDF Energy's management. This photograph not only showcases the remarkable progress made in nuclear energy during the 1990s but also highlights how human ingenuity and technical expertise can shape our world. It serves as a testament to both our ability to harness clean and efficient sources of power and our commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for future generations. Preserved by Historic England Archive and brought back to life by A©, this image allows us to appreciate both the historical significance and architectural marvels associated with such ambitious projects.
