Sun King theatre costume, and King Louis XIV of France, 1882-1884
Sun King theatre costume, and King Louis XIV of France, 1882-1884. Although Louis (1638-1715) inherited the French crown in 1643, he did not actually take the reigns of power until the death of his Chief Minister, Cardinal Mazarin, in 1661. Known as the Sun King, Louis was the epitome of the absolute monarch. He was on the throne for 72 years, longer than any other major European ruler. His reign saw a flowering of the arts and architecture in France, including the building of the magnificent Palace of Versailles, as well as a growth of French economic and military power. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Sun King theatre costume worn by King Louis XIV of France during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Known as Louis Dieudonné, he ascended to the French throne in 1643 but truly assumed power upon Cardinal Mazarin's demise in 1661. Renowned as an absolute monarch, Louis XIV reigned for an unprecedented 72 years, surpassing all other European rulers of his time. The image captures the essence of this influential ruler who left an indelible mark on French history. Adorned in vibrant robes and a meticulously crafted wig, King Louis XIV strikes a commanding pose that exemplifies his regal stature. This engraving is part of La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV—an esteemed publication edited by F Roy and published between 1882-1884. Louis XIV's reign witnessed remarkable advancements in arts, architecture, economics, and military might within France. Notably, it marked the construction of the opulent Palace of Versailles—a testament to his grandeur and ambition. As we gaze at this print from over a century ago, we are transported back to an era when monarchy held immense power and influence over society. It serves as a reminder not only of Louis XIV's enduring legacy but also of the rich cultural heritage that continues to captivate us today.
