Shiva and His Followers Approach Mount Kailash, from a Romance of Chandrabhanu... 1700s

Shiva and His Followers Approach Mount Kailash, from a Romance of Chandrabhanu and Lavanyavati of Upendra Bhanja (Indian, died 1740), 1700s. At left is a multicoloured mountain, labeled by an inscription in the local language of Oriya as a " cave on Kailash, " the Himalayan abode of the god Shiva and his wife Parvati. The cave with its bed and bolsters is empty, but the god is returning home on his bull, Nandi. The wilderness is indicated by the variety of trees, birds, and spotted deer. This illustrated leaf is from a book that would have been stacked and bound by a string through the hole in the center. The lines were etched with a stylus into the palm leaf. Black soot from butter lamps was rubbed over the page and wiped off, leaving only the grooves black. Afterward, artists added colour using a brush

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1700s, immersing us in the mystical world of Indian mythology. Titled "Shiva and His Followers Approach Mount Kailash" it depicts a scene from the Romance of Chandrabhanu and Lavanyavati, authored by Upendra Bhanja. At the center of this vibrant artwork stands Shiva, one of Hinduism's most revered deities. Riding atop his faithful bull Nandi, he is seen returning home to his abode on Mount Kailash. The multicolored mountain at the left is labeled as a cave on Kailash, where Shiva resides with his wife Parvati. The artist skillfully captures the essence of wilderness surrounding them - trees sway gracefully in various shades of green while birds soar through the sky above. Spotted deer roam freely amidst this natural paradise. To create this masterpiece, artisans etched intricate lines into palm leaves using a stylus before applying black soot from butter lamps over them. This technique gives depth and dimension to each detail while maintaining an ethereal quality. Adding further enchantment to their creation, artists delicately painted opaque watercolors onto the palm leaf canvas. Their brushstrokes bring life to every element within this mesmerizing composition. Preserved for centuries, this illustrated leaf was part of a book that would have been bound together with others using strings through its central hole. Now housed within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, it serves as a testament to India's rich artistic heritage and spiritual traditions.
