EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lord Shelburne, a prominent 18th-century British Whig statesman. The photograph, taken around 1880, captures the essence of this influential figure who played a crucial role in shaping British politics during his time. William Petty, also known as the 2nd Earl of Shelburne, was an astute politician who made history with his bold actions. In 1782, he agreed to assume the position of Home Secretary in Lord Rockingham's government on one condition - that King George III recognized the United States. This demand highlights Shelburne's commitment to diplomacy and his forward-thinking approach. After Lord Rockingham passed away later that year, Shelburne ascended to become Prime Minister. However, his tenure was short-lived due to political turmoil within the Whig party. Charles James Fox split from the party and formed a coalition with Lord North and the Tories, leading to Shelburne's resignation in April of the following year. The portrait exudes power and determination as it immortalizes this significant figure from Britain's past. It serves as a reminder of Lord Shelburne's pivotal role during times of revolution and war - particularly during America's fight for independence from Great Britain between 1775 and 1783. This remarkable engraving is part of Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier - an invaluable resource capturing important moments in history through stunning visuals like this one.
