EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures President James Garfield during the period of 1870-80. Taken by an American photographer in the 19th century, this image is part of a private collection. President Garfield, born in 1831, served as the 20th President of the United States from March to September 1881. Prior to his presidency, he had an illustrious career in politics, completing nine consecutive terms in the U. S. House of Representatives. Tragically, Garfield's time as president was cut short when he was shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau on July 2nd, 1881. Despite medical efforts to save him, Garfield succumbed to his injuries on September 19th that same year. In this portrait photograph, we see a half-length view of President James Garfield with his distinguished beard and serious expression. His presence exudes strength and determination befitting a leader of his time. Preserved for historical significance and out of copyright restrictions today, this image serves as a reminder not only of President Garfield's brief but impactful presidency but also highlights the turbulent political climate during that era in American history.
