This photograph captures the grandeur of The Gallery at Drayton Manor in Staffordshire, England. Taken by an English photographer in the 20th century, this print is a part of Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002. The gallery was commissioned by Sir Robert Peel, who enlisted the renowned architect Sir Robert Smirke to construct a Jacobethan house around 1824. This particular addition to the estate was designed by Smirke's brother, Sydney, and served as a dedicated space for housing Sir Robert Peel's impressive art collection. Photographed in 1908, this image showcases the interior of The Gallery with its skylights illuminating the Victorian architecture. Greek revival influences can be seen through the elegant columns that line the room. Unfortunately, despite its beauty and historical significance, The Gallery met a tragic fate when it was demolished in 1926. Within these walls once hung priceless paintings that adorned this stately home. This photograph offers us a glimpse into history and allows us to appreciate both the craftsmanship of Victorian architecture and the cultural importance of preserving our heritage.
