King Edward VIII himself took part in the 60 year old ceremony of distributing Maundy

King Edward VIII himself took part in the 60 year old ceremony of distributing Maundy Money at Westminster Abbey on Maundy Thursday.
This is only the second time that a reigning King has attended the service in 200 years. The late King George was present in 1934.
At the service the King handed the specially minted coins to as many deserving old men and women as he has years of age, 42. Eighty four people benefited.
The gentlemen of the Royal Almonry wore towels during the ceremony to symbolise the time, hundreds of years ago, when Kings washed the feet of poor people.
Photo shows, the scene inside Westminster Abbey as the King distributed the Maundy money.

King Edward VIII Distributes Maundy Money at Westminster Abbey, 1936". In a rare and historic ceremony, King Edward VIII himself took part in the age-old tradition of distributing Maundy Money at Westminster Abbey on Maundy Thursday. This remarkable event marked only the second time in two centuries that a reigning King had attended this sacred service. The previous occasion was witnessed by King George back in 1934. With grace and dignity, the King personally handed specially minted coins to deserving old men and women, matching his own years of age which stood at 42. A total of eighty-four individuals were fortunate recipients of this royal gesture. During the solemn proceedings, an intriguing symbol from centuries past was revived as gentlemen from the Royal Almonry donned towels. These humble garments served as a reminder of times long gone when Kings would humbly wash the feet of those less fortunate. The captivating photo captures a scene inside Westminster Abbey during this significant moment in history. It portrays King Edward VIII graciously fulfilling his duty as he distributes Maundy money to grateful recipients. The image evokes nostalgia for a bygone era while preserving this poignant memory forever.
