Working shaft in the Kilsby Tunnel
8 July 1937
The tunnel is located near the village of Kilsby in Northamptonshire and opened in 1838 as a part of the London and Birmingham Railway. The tunnel took far longer, and cost far more money to build than had been anticipated. This was because the tunnel roof collapsed and the tunnel flooded unexpectedly due to quicksand which trial borings into the hill had not revealed. The excess water from the quicksand had to be pumped out, a process which took eight months

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a significant moment in history - the working shaft in the Kilsby Tunnel on 8th July 1937. Located near the village of Kilsby in Northamptonshire, this tunnel was an integral part of the London and Birmingham Railway, which opened its doors back in 1838. However, its construction proved to be far more challenging than anticipated. The tunnel faced numerous setbacks as its roof collapsed and unexpected flooding occurred due to hidden quicksand that trial borings had failed to reveal. To overcome these obstacles, diligent workers tirelessly pumped out excess water from the quicksand for eight long months. This image showcases their dedication and resilience amidst adversity during a time when engineering marvels were being created across the nation. The photograph not only offers a glimpse into the golden age of train travel but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity during the industrial revolution. It symbolizes an era where innovation and invention paved the way for progress in various industries, including transportation. Preserved by www. TopFoto. co. uk, this print allows us to appreciate both the beauty of light filtering through steam-filled air and acknowledge those unsung heroes who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes to shape our modern world.
