Tabun-Khara-Obo, an ancient impact crater in southeastern Mongolia
August 28, 2009 - True-color image of Tabun-Khara-Obo, an ancient impact crater In southeastern Mongolia, roughly halfway between Ulaanbaatar and Beijing. Sunlight shines from the southeast, leaving the northern and western slopes in shadow. The crateras rim rises some 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet) above the crater bottom. The crater occurs on a block of Proterzoic rock more than 600 million years old, but the crateras age, which may be considerably younger, has not yet been identified. The dark, irregularly shaped area in the lower right corner of the image results from vegetation, likely occurring along a river channel. For the most part, the scene shows an earth-toned, arid landscape

EDITORS COMMENTS
This true-color image captures the breathtaking Tabun-Khara-Obo, an ancient impact crater nestled in the southeastern region of Mongolia. The photograph showcases a stunning landscape that stretches between Ulaanbaatar and Beijing, with sunlight casting its golden rays from the southeast. As a result, the northern and western slopes are veiled in shadow, adding an air of mystery to this natural wonder. The rim of Tabun-Khara-Obo rises majestically above the crater bottom, standing tall at 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet). This awe-inspiring formation sits on a block of Proterozoic rock that dates back over 600 million years. However, scientists have yet to determine the exact age of this remarkable crater. Intriguingly, vegetation dots the lower right corner of the image along what appears to be a river channel. Its dark and irregular shape adds contrast against the earth-toned arid landscape surrounding it. This full-frame view from space offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary creations. With no human presence visible in this square-shaped photograph taken by Stocktrek Images' satellite view photography, we can fully appreciate both its grandeur and isolation. Tabun-Khara-Obo stands as a testament to Mongolia's unique geography and topography while showcasing Central Asia's diverse terrain. It serves as a reminder that our planet is still filled with hidden wonders waiting to be discovered and explored.
