Kuiper Belt Object

This is an artists impression of the icy Kuiper belt object 2002 LM60, dubbed Quaoar by its discoverers. With the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have determined that Quaoar (pronounced kwa-whar) is the largest body found in the solar system since the discovery of Pluto 72 years ago. Quaoar is about 800 miles (1300 kilometers) in diameter and is about half the size of Pluto. Like Pluto, Quaoar dwells in the Kuiper belt, an icy debris field of comet-like bodies extending 7 billion miles beyond Neptunes orbit. Quaoar is the farthest object in the solar system ever to be resolved by a telescope. It is about 4 billion miles (6.5 billion kilometers) from Earth, more than 1 billion miles farther than Pluto

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Kuiper Belt Object known as Quaoar, beautifully depicted by an artist's impression. With the assistance of the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have unraveled fascinating details about this icy celestial body. Measuring a staggering 800 miles (1300 kilometers) in diameter, Quaoar holds the prestigious title of being the largest object discovered in our solar system since Pluto's identification 72 years ago. Residing within the Kuiper belt, a vast expanse of comet-like debris extending beyond Neptune's orbit for 7 billion miles, Quaoar shares similarities with its distant neighbor. In fact, it is roughly half the size of Pluto itself. Positioned approximately 4 billion miles (6.5 billion kilometers) away from Earth – over a billion miles farther than Pluto – Quaoar stands as an extraordinary testament to human ingenuity and technological advancements. This awe-inspiring image represents not only a significant milestone in astronomical exploration but also serves as a reminder of our insatiable curiosity about the universe we inhabit. The spherical shape and mesmerizing surface features captured here provide invaluable insights into these enigmatic objects residing within our cosmic neighborhood. As we gaze upon this digitally generated masterpiece, we are reminded that there is still so much left to discover and comprehend about these distant worlds that exist far beyond our reach. It is through such breathtaking images that we can truly appreciate both the beauty and complexity of our vast universe.
