EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour and pen sketch of HMS Erebus, created by renowned British artist Graham Gore on May 22, 1845, captures the majestic beauty and intricate details of the Royal Navy's exploratory vessel as it sailed off Aldborough, in the early hours of the morning. The HMS Erebus, a two-masted, iron-hulled polar exploration ship, was commissioned for Sir James Clark Ross's Antarctic expedition. At this point in the voyage, the Erebus had already achieved significant discoveries, including the discovery of the Bay of Islands and Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. This image, painted at 3 AM, showcases the ship's impressive silhouette against the dark, starry night sky, with the faint outlines of the surrounding waves and the glimmer of the moonlight on the water. The delicate brushwork and meticulous attention to detail in this sketch highlight the skill and artistry of Graham Gore, who was renowned for his maritime paintings. The HMS Erebus, with its distinctive black hull and tall masts, stands proudly against the backdrop of the vast, open sea, embodying the spirit of adventure and exploration that characterized the Age of Sail. This artwork is part of the extensive collection held by the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) at the University of Cambridge. The Institute's archives preserve a wealth of historical records, maps, and artworks related to polar exploration, providing invaluable insights into the history of polar discovery and the human endeavour to understand our world.
