Wasp head, SEM
Wasp head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underview of a wasps head (order Hymenoptera). Its large compound eyes (purple) are seen on either side of its head. Antennae, used for sensing smells, sprout from between the eyes. The wasps powerful biting jaws (mandibles) are just below the eyes. At centre are the wasps front legs. Wasps are vital for natural biocontrol. Nearly every pest insect species has a wasp species that is its predator or parasite. Magnification: x3 when printed 10 cm high
