Vasily Fesenkov, Russian astrophysicist

Vasily Grigorievich Fesenkov (1889-1972), Russian astrophysicist, adjusting a telescope. Fesenkov studied at Kharkov University (Ukraine), and at the Sorbonne (Paris). In 1923, he founded the Russian Astrophysics Institute in Moscow, and directed it from 1936-39. He was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1935. After World War II, he worked in what is now Kazahkstan, founding an observatory in Almaty, where he worked for nearly 20 years. He studied the phenomenon of zodiacal light and other aspects of solar system astronomy, as well as areas of cosmology. His awards included the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner.
